La Petite Bourgogne

Part 1

The Negro Community Centre in Montreal's Little Burgundy (La Petite-Bourgogne) was founded in 1927 by Reverend Charles H. Este from Union United Church. The NCC has always been a beacon in the city's black community, but this landmark has been left to deteriorate for over 20 years, leaving a generation of youth without a place to learn about the importance of black art, history and culture. More recently, there have been calls to reopen the NCC, with the city of Montreal putting money forward, but the other levels of government (provincial and federal) have yet to show any kind of support. The NCC's purpose in the community has always been "to alleviate social and economic conditions among Blacks in Montreal.
